Summer is the season that separates a lawn that’s set up right from one that’s fighting to survive. Between the heat and sun our region sees from June through August, small mistakes in watering or mowing show up fast. Here’s how we keep our maintenance clients’ lawns green through the hottest stretch of the year.
Water deep and less often, not shallow and every day
The instinct in a heat wave is to water more, but watering a little bit every day trains roots to stay shallow, right where the heat can reach them. A longer, deeper watering two or three times a week pushes roots down where the soil stays cooler and holds moisture longer. Early morning is the right time, before the heat and wind take their share through evaporation.
Raise the mowing height
Cutting grass shorter doesn’t mean less mowing, it means more stress. Taller grass shades its own roots, holds moisture better, and handles foot traffic without browning out. We raise the deck for summer and keep it there until temperatures start to drop in fall.
Check your irrigation system for leaks and coverage gaps
A cracked head, a clogged nozzle, or a zone that’s drifting off target wastes water and leaves dry patches that are easy to blame on the heat instead of the system. A quick midsummer check catches problems while they’re still a five minute fix instead of a dead section of lawn.
Watch for stress before it becomes damage
Heat stressed grass shows up as a dull, grayish tint before it ever turns brown. Catching that early, with a water schedule adjustment instead of waiting for damage, is the difference between a lawn that recovers in days and one that needs reseeding in the fall.
Don’t forget the spaces you built to enjoy
Summer is exactly why you invested in that paver patio, outdoor kitchen, or putting green in the first place. Rinse off pollen and dust, check that turf infill hasn’t shifted, and give hardscapes a quick look before your next gathering. These are the months they’re built for.
A green lawn in August isn’t luck
After 40 years of Tri-Cities summers, we’ve learned that the lawns still green in August are the ones on the right watering schedule, not the ones getting the most water. If your lawn is struggling, or you’d like a maintenance plan that handles this for you all season, we’re here for it.
